Estação de tratamento de água (ETA) atendida por gerador de hipoclorito in loco Sanitation da H2O
On-site chlorination · Sanitation

On-site hypochlorite generator (in situ) for water utilities.

The Sanitation hypochlorite generator produces sodium hypochlorite on-site from salt, water and electricity, through brine electrolysis. In other words: no more transport, storage or handling of chlorine gas — safe, continuous disinfection for public water supply.

The problem

Buying chlorine means cost, logistics and risk.

Relying on purchased, transported chlorine carries three liabilities that every water treatment plant operator knows well.

Recurring cost

Buying chlorine gas or commercial hypochlorite means supply contracts, recurring freight and loss of active content during storage. In addition, the cost fluctuates with the market and supplier price increases.

Logistics dependency

Disinfection becomes hostage to deliveries, lead times and availability. A supply disruption interrupts chlorination and compromises the residual delivered to the population.

Chlorine gas risk

Chlorine gas cylinders and hazardous products on site require licensing and an emergency plan. They also expose operators and neighbors to the risk of a toxic leak.

The solution · Sanitation

Sanitation: on-site hypochlorite generator by electrolysis.

The Sanitation generator produces sodium hypochlorite at the plant itself, through brine electrolysis. The NaCl solution flows through titanium electrolytic cells, where chloride is oxidized, generating active chlorine on the spot. In addition, automated dosing pumps allow fine adjustment of the residual according to the plant's flow rate — continuously and automatically.

✓ Continuous 24/7 production
✓ ORP-controlled dosing
✓ Inputs: water, salt and electricity
✓ ~0.8% hypochlorite (non-hazardous)
How it works

From salt to hypochlorite, right at the treatment plant.

01

Salt + water

First, brine is prepared with ordinary salt and water — no hazardous inputs at the facility.

02

Electrolytic cell

Next, the reactor converts the brine through electrolysis: the electric current releases the active chlorine.

03

Sodium hypochlorite

The chlorine solution is generated on the spot, already at working concentration.

04

Network disinfection

Finally, continuous dosing treats the water distributed to the population.

Why adopt it

Benefits of a hypochlorite generator for your water utility.

Savings

A local input made from ordinary salt, with no chlorine supply contracts, recurring freight or losses from expired stock. As a result, the cost per kg of chlorine becomes predictable.

Operational safety

Eliminates the transport, storage and handling of chlorine gas, reducing risks for operators and the surrounding community.

Sustainability

Fewer freight emissions, less packaging and a smaller logistics footprint. In other words, clean disinfection aligned with the municipality's environmental goals.

Autonomy

Production happens on demand, at the plant's own pace, without depending on deliveries or third-party minimum stock.

Compliance

Stable, traceable free residual chlorine, within the standards of Brazilian Ordinance GM/MS 888/2021 for drinking water.

Precise dosing

Control by ORP and current density keeps the residual at the setpoint, with minimal variation and no waste of inputs.

Comparison

On-site chlorination vs. purchased, transported chlorine.

Sanitation · on-site
Conventional chlorine
Input
Brine electrolysis (NaCl + H₂O) at the point of use
Cl₂ gas or NaClO purchased from third parties
Concentration
~0.8% sodium hypochlorite — non-hazardous solution, with no hazard classification for storage/transport
100% Cl₂ (toxic gas) or 10–12% NaClO (corrosive)
Salt consumption
~3 kg of salt per kg of equivalent chlorine
Not applicable — ready-made product
Energy consumption
~4.5 kWh per kg of equivalent chlorine
Energy embedded in freight and external production
Logistics
On-site production, with no recurring supply chain
Frequent transport of a product classified as hazardous
Storage
On-demand generation according to flow rate; no storage of chlorinated chemicals
Regulated storage and loss of active content through degradation
Safety
No pressurized cylinders; the H₂ generated is vented through dedicated exhaust
Risk of toxic gas leaks and occupational exposure
Cost
Low, predictable OPEX (salt + electricity); unaffected by supplier price increases
Variable cost, tied to freight and the chlorine market
Environmental
Less waste and fewer logistics emissions
Logistics footprint, packaging and transport waste

FAQ

Questions from those who run water utilities.

What is on-site chlorination?
It is the production of sodium hypochlorite at the treatment plant itself, through electrolysis of a salt and water solution. Active chlorine is generated at the time of use, eliminating the purchase, transport and storage of chlorine.
Does the system comply with Brazilian Ordinance GM/MS 888/2021?
Yes. The hypochlorite generated maintains the free residual chlorine required for drinking water, with continuous, controlled dosing within potability parameters.
What infrastructure is needed at the facility?
A compact set: water tank, salt dissolver (brine preparation) and hypochlorite tank, plus the electrolytic reactor and control panel, sized according to the flow rate and population served. See how to size the generator.
Is it safer than chlorine gas?
Yes. There are no chlorine gas cylinders or hazardous product storage on site, which drastically reduces the risk of leaks and the exposure of operators and neighbors.
Do you handle installation and operation?
Yes. H2O designs, installs and supports the operation of the system, with technical follow-up and maintenance to ensure continuous disinfection.
